Does Cameron Diaz Always Play the Same Role?

Let me preface by saying I heart Cameron Diaz. She's gorgeous and an awesome actress. However with the premiere of her new movie, "Bad Teacher" coming out last week, I can't help but notice Diaz continually plays the same type of characters in many of her movie roles.

Before seeing the preview for a movie, I can tell you what type of character Diaz will play. The characteristics oftentimes seem to include: quirky, funny, tomboy, smart yet goofy and girl next door. We have seen Cameron get serious a time or two, with roles such as when she played the mother of a young girl suffering from leukemia in "My Sister's Keeper.". Overall she plays the ditzy, yet loveable gal. The following movie roles show that Diaz is typecast in the same roles again and again.

Charlie's Angels

Diaz played a bit of a dingbat in the Charlie's Angels movies. In them, she would go from adorably goofy one minute to kicking a bad guy's teeth in the next. This character did not seem to have a serious bone in her body, and was seen doing things such as dancing in the "Soul Train" line and as always, gushing over a guy.

The Sweetest Thing

I have to admit, I owned this movie on DVD at one time and found myself watching it numerous times. It's a cute, feel good movie. In it, Diaz plays a sweet, quirky woman who parties at the club and hangs out with her girls. She gets a crush on a guy and heads out on a road trip in search of him. She is involved in antics such as running across a public street in her underwear and getting sprayed in the face with toilet water when making a pit stop.

There's Something About Mary

"There's Something About Mary" has become a cult classic among movie buffs. While she was not the center of all funny moments, she did seem to play the same girl next door type she ! typicall y tends to play.

What Happens in Vegas

Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher; need I say more? Well, in case I do, this movie was a cute, yet predictable comedy starring the two aforementioned celebs. Diaz stepped out of the box a little bit, playing the mean girl, but otherwise not much made this role stand out from the many other she's played.

In Her Shoes

Diaz played the unpredictable, flighty character in this movie. Predictably cute as a button, viewers loved to hate her character for some of her behavior in the movie (I will avoid spoilers).

Knight and Day

One of Diaz's more recent films, Diaz plays a girl who unwittingly ends up the running buddy of a spy. While her character was likeable, she's getting a bit too old to continue to play the girl next door, as she is now approaching 40 and should be considered the woman next door. I found her role in this movie a bit tired and overdone.
